Our Vision

Mission Statement

The spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.

WHO WE ARE AT ST. MARTIN DE PORRES

We are an African American Catholic parish with a blend of faith family members from various ethnic backgrounds and communities throughout Kentuckiana. We care about one another, those around us and those we must reach from afar by prayer. We place emphasis on our children, males and families. We respect and celebrate our elders and care for those who hurt. We place emphasis on our Africentric worship services that speak to our religious belief and our spiritual traditions.

 Goals:

1. To continue developing a strong, Africentric, worshiping family to:

  • Improve worship services with their gifts
  • Foster and develop programs and activities that strengthen our member’s spiritual gifts.
  • Encourage, affirm and support effective preaching of the Good News to the poor.
  • Provide opportunities for members input on a regular basis.

2. Strengthen the African American family by providing/supporting the systems needed for a
healthy, wholesome life to:

  • Develop a comprehensive family life program which includes parenting skills.
  • Network with government and other agencies who assist families.
  • Release the oppressed who are affected by racism, by substance abuse, by spouse abuse and by violence.

3. To provide Africentric educational programs for the parish family to:

  • Develop Christian education study programs for the parish family.
  • Provide opportunities for multicultural experiences.

4. To identify and call forth lay leaders to:

  • Encourage individuals to participate in leadership programs and thus to share their gifts and talents.
  • Develop programs that affirm and strengthen positive male and female role models.

5. Have an active role in Social Justice needs/issues to:

  • Develop a prison-based ministry program to proclaim freedom for prisoners.
  • Provide educational opportunities that encourage members to become/continue to be active citizens working for equal justice and peace.

6. To improve the parish commitment to stewardship and development

  • Provide opportunities for members to increase their participation in parish activities.
  • Emphasize the obligation each member has for developing and supporting the life of the parish family.
  • Encourage members to respond to parish and community needs with their time, talents and treasure.
  • Continue participation in community programs and activities.
