Hands Across Louisville. Bilal Powell was a UofL football player and was drafted to the New York Jets 4 years ago. On December 5, it was #Cleats for a Cause" weekend in which, any player with the NFL could pick a charity and have special cleats made for that game. After the game the cleats will be auctioned off and the proceeds come back to the charity. Bilal Powell picked Hands Across Louisville. This is a grassroots program to help stamp out gun violence. Below you will find two links, one for the online auction of the cleats and the other is an article in the Huffington Post about Bilal and his passion to want to end violence and the effect gun violence has played in his life. The Hands Across Louisville website is If you would like to make a donation then you can use the paypal account or you can send a check or money order made payable to St Martin de Porres church and on the MEMO line write Hands Across Louisville. So, I know with only a day and a half left on the online auction, I dropped the ball on this because Bilal's manager and I normally talk or text. But when he sent the information about the auction, it was via email. Our next event will be May 13, 2017, it will be the same format as this year 10-5 with speakers, performers, etc, and the hand holding will be from 2-3. The stage will be in front of St Martin de Porres church and the Catholic Enrichment Center at 3112 W Broadway. Also, our sister parish Epiphany is also a partner with us. They have been tremendous in the partnership with St Martin de Porres. Hands Across Louisville is not just going to be a once a year big event, we will start working on our goals of trying to understand the "root causes" of the violence, anger management, low self esteem, job creation and job skills to help build back up our community as a whole. We are primarily working with West Louisville at this time, because that is where the media seems to focus all the negativity. West Louisville has a rich history and many successful people have come up out of the area. That's what we want to focus on and bring attention to. We want to showcase the many talented people in the area now, young and older.
